This is a ridiculous short. Many of the systems would be outdated? On a plane that was built at the same time as the f-22. Which happens to be our main air superiority fighter, and flies around with f18s that were old enough to drink by the time f-22 came around. We literally still use f16 which was built in the early 70s. The idea that a plane using newer technology than the planes we currently use is somehow outdated is beyond ridiculous. Sounds like some ai nonsense.

Testing had all sorts of expectations and bombing bays was not one of them. The test version of the YF-23A was not made with bomb bay doors, and thankfully that wasn't part of the test. Unfortunately for the YF-23A, the F-22 was found to be more practical, though at the time, thrust vectoring was seen as too much weight and impractical. Thrust vectoring is now the pinnacle of Fighter jet enthusiast all around the world.

A big thing nobody is accounting for... is that they were all within visual range. Of course 5th gens woulda smoked em at longer distances, however they were all within dog fight and gun range.

I know they always bring up range, but no one ever talks about how we effectively eliminated range as a factor by creating a massive fleet of stratotankers. For exmple, the first wave of B-52s that bombed Baghdad in 1991 took off from Louisiana. And landed back in Louisiana. We don't need forward airbases to launch an airstrike. It's just for convenience.

The Blackbird’s RSO specifically asked about how fast could the Voodoo climb to 80,000’+ because he knew that at the lower levels they were currently at ~ around 25,000’ ~ the Voodoo was quite a beast and could indeed keep up with and even outclimb the Blackbird, which would generally only come into it’s own at 50,000’+. What the Voodoo pilots really needed was an English Electric Lightning. There were regular instances of Lightnings intercepting Concorde and several very surprised U2 flights at very high altitudes. They also intercepted a SR71 over the Atlantic as it was en route to display at the Farnborough Air Show. The RAF sent out a particular F3 Lightning that was known to be a hot ship which, after tanking, did a ballistic climb and bounced the unsuspecting Blackbird by descending from above and behind it. Cue high levels of simultaneous merriment and embarrassment from both parties. The Lightning was a real hot rod, the RAF only admitting it could reach ‘60,000’+’ in the 1960’s and was later confirmed to be able to reach 88,000’ using a ballistic profile. Of course, as it was designed purely as an interceptor to get very high very quickly, it drank fuel faster than a terminal alcoholic let loose in a brewery, but just watch film of one climbing like a homesick angel. It’s mighty impressive. When Deke Slayton ~ one of the Mercury 7 astronauts ~ flew the P-1 prototype which was before the name ‘Lightning’ was even attached to the aircraft, he said that although the range was an obvious issue, it had the easy handling of the F-86 and the performance of the F-104.
